ART: Antony Gormley: Event Horizon

Antony Gormley’s cast iron (4) and fiberglass (27) statues will populate NYC’S Madison Square Park and the surrounding Flatiron District. The outdoor event/exhibition is a bit of a reprise of 2007’s Blind Light, where Gormley’s work originally appeared at London’s Hayward Gallery. It is all part of an outside art concept called Event Horizon.

MY THOUGHTS:

In this instillation , Man is almost super imposed on the surrounding environment and rudely interupts the smooth lines of the anonymus buildings. Through this uncomfotable visual statement, Gormley is almost tuning around power roles. We are man and although we are smaller, more delicate and more vulnerable than the New York City sky line, we can still ‘rise’ above, after all we built this city.
